Collage
Collaging has always been part of my artistic play and an activity of pure joy for me. As young kids my sister and I would rip up magazines and create our dream lives and vision boards, picking the house, the dog, job, the environment, colors, words we were drawn to. The past two years I have re-introduced it as part of my practice, and especially when I am feeling stuck it always reignites my spark. It is like a paradox of containment and freedom. There are only so many pages in a magazine or book but once you start to play with them you realize there are endless possibilities to rip or cut or layer even one specific image that calls to you. I often struggle to find when I should stop playing and finally glue things down into place. I also love collaging in community to see what everyone else is drawn to and the ways they decide to piece things together.. I love that I cannot predict what will come about during a collage session but ultimately it never fails to end in the most wonderfully funky cool ways.
